How to Clean and Care for Your Gold and Silver Chains

A little care keeps your chain looking new for years. Here is how to clean it and keep it safe.

How to clean a gold chain

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Soak the chain for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Gently brush the links with a soft, clean toothbrush.
  4. Rinse with warm water.
  5. Pat dry with a soft cloth, then let it air dry fully.

How to clean a 925 silver chain

Silver can darken over time. This is called tarnish and it is normal.

  1. Wash it the same way as gold, with warm water and mild soap.
  2. Dry it fully.
  3. Polish it with a silver polishing cloth to bring back the shine.

For gold plated or rose gold plated silver, skip the polishing cloth and do not scrub. Rubbing can wear the plating away.

What to avoid

  • Bleach, pool chlorine and strong cleaners
  • Toothpaste or baking soda on plated pieces
  • Perfume, lotion and hair spray right on the chain (put them on first, then the chain)

Everyday care tips

  • Take your chain off before the gym, swimming, showering or sleeping
  • Store each chain on its own, hanging or laid flat, so it does not tangle
  • Keep silver in a small zip bag to slow down tarnish
  • Semi-solid chains can dent, so keep them away from hard knocks
