How to Pick the Right Chain for Your Pendant

The right chain makes a pendant look better and keeps it safe. Here is how to match them.

1. Check the bail

The bail is the loop at the top of the pendant. The chain and its clasp must fit through it. Measure the bail opening, or bring the pendant to our store and we will check.

2. Match the width to the pendant size

Pendant Chain width
Small (charm, small cross) 1.5mm to 3mm
Medium 3mm to 5mm
Large or heavy (iced-out, big medallion) 5mm and up, solid chain

A heavy pendant on a thin chain looks off balance and can break the chain.

3. Pick a strong style

Best chains for pendants: Franco, rope, Cuban curb and rolo. They are strong and let the pendant hang straight. For a heavy pendant, choose a solid chain, not semi-solid.

4. Go a little longer

A pendant pulls the chain down and takes up space. Most people pick a chain about 2 inches longer than they would wear without a pendant.

  • Men: 22 to 26 inches is common
  • Women: 18 to 20 inches is common

5. Match the metal

Put gold pendants on gold chains and silver on silver. This looks best and stops the metals from rubbing each other.
