Two gold chains can look the same from the front but be built very differently. At Shine Jewelers you will see two kinds: solid and semi-solid.
Solid gold chains
Every link is gold all the way through.
- Heavier, with more gold in each chain
- Very strong, hard to dent
- Easier for a jeweler to repair if a link breaks
- Costs more
Semi-solid gold chains
The links are made with less gold inside, so the chain is lighter. It is still real gold, marked with its karat.
- Lighter to wear
- Gives you a wide, bold look for less money
- Can dent if it gets hit or pinched hard
- Harder to repair than solid
Side by side
| Solid | Semi-solid | |
|---|---|---|
| Real gold | Yes | Yes |
| Weight | Heavier | Lighter |
| Price for the same width | Higher | Lower |
| Strength | Best | Good, with care |
| Best for | Wearing every day for years | A big look on a budget |
Which one should you buy?
If you wear your chain every day, sleep in it or work out in it, solid is worth the extra money. If you want a wide chain for going out and want to keep the price down, semi-solid is a smart pick.
Care tips
- Take your chain off before the gym, swimming or sleeping
- Store it flat or hanging so it does not kink
- Clean it with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth
Shop gold chains and gold bracelets. Each listing says solid or semi-solid in the name.
